Our test unit came with a burgundy calf-leather back, which feels quite supple and has that distinct leather aroma. Vertu offers different finishes, including blue lizard skin, and prices can exceed $20,000 depending on the options you choose. It's an impressive handset, but not appreciably better-looking than the HTC One M8, at least for my tastes. All that matters is that the Signature Touch is fast and capable of handling most anything you throw at it at least as well as any other Android phone on the market. The Signature Touch runs Android KitKat with some light aesthetic changes courtesy of Vertu. When you first power the phone on, you'll be greeted by a shiny clock widget with a mesmerizing parallax effect—tilt the phone and the sheen on the clock shifts. Wow. Such luxury. Aside from spiffy new icons and widgets, Vertu also added Dolby audio profiles and two power saving modes, which dial back wireless connectivity to varying degrees. The rest of Android is essentially a stock experience, aside from the built-in Vertu perks, which I'll get to shortly. Around back is a 13-megapixel camera, with a shooter up front. The rear-facing camera takes great images in good lighting, producing crisp details and lifelike colors. Dynamic range was also above average, preserving details in shadows without overexposing highlights. Indoors things start to get a bit grainy, and I noticed the Signature Touch struggling with exposure at times. The biggest drawback here is the relatively long shutter delay. Instead of instantaneous shots like you'll get with an iPhone 5s or Galaxy S5, there's a brief but noticeable pause between pressing the capture button and actually snapping a pic. Video tops out at 1080p and framerates are steady at 30fps. It's a solid camera, no doubt, but despite the Hasselblad branding, it's only on par with its competitors and in some cases lags behind. The Perks of Being Obscenely Rich Beyond the specs and design, the real reasons you even consider a Vertu phone are the perks. There are three main services that go well beyond anything you'll find in competing phones Vertu Life, Concierge, and Certainty. Vertu Life offers a curated collection of exclusive events and experiences that might otherwise be difficult to access. These includes things like a private submarine tour around the Maldives, front-row seats to the Espys, and VIP stays at high-end hotels. There is no way someone in my position would be able to weasel my way into any of these events, but it's possible that someone who can afford a $10,800 phone could. The key here is the effort involved—Vertu does all the legwork. Concierge is even more impressive. It's essentially an open-ended version of Vertu Life, limited only by your imagination and legal boundaries, of course. The service comes free with the phone for the first year, after which you'll need to pay around $3,000 per year for the privilege. With it, you get 24/7 access to a real human who will help you with everything from restaurant reservations and last-minute travel bookings to gaining access to exclusive places or events. You can do this over the phone or simply text away with the live chat feature. When asked what kind of things they could do for me, my friendly concierge Quentin casually noted he could get me World Cup final tickets, among other things. Of course, you'll have to pay for the actual items, like tickets and hotel accommodations, but all you have to do is provide a credit card, sit back, and remind yourself that the crippling debt is totally worth it. Quentin offered me multiple options for dining there, including a Saturday evening just next week. I can barely get a table at the Chipotle down the street, so this was a huge triumph. Concierge can also provide an extensive list of recommendations for whatever you might be interested in. I requested some tapas and new American restaurants for an upcoming birthday, and by the next morning I had an email in my inbox with over 10 recommendations in my neighborhood. But Vertu has been in this game since 1998, so there probably are people buying phones this outrageously expensive I'm looking at you, Russian oligarchs reading PCMag. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Signature Touch—I felt like the valet from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, stealing a peek into the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Pas de chaîne de montage une seule personne réalise ce petit bijou. Elle signera d’ailleurs de son nom chaque appareil confectionné. Et côté finition, le résultat est évidemment… parfait ! Pourquoi tant de soin ? Parce que le Signature Touch se conçoit d’abord comme un bijou. Son boîtier est bordé d’un cerclage en métal, mais pas n’importe lequel du titane, très solide, quatre fois plus résistant que l’aluminium, mais aussi deux fois plus lourd. C’est pourquoi l’appareil, s’il est agréable à prendre en main, pèse 192 grammes pour un format 4,7 pouces, un poids bien supérieur à la moyenne. Le reste du smartphone est couvert d’un véritable cuir de veau, de lézard ou d’alligator, selon les modèles. On y trouve également de la céramique noire, souvent utilisée en joaillerie. Un concierge personnel dévoué Le Vertu Signature Touch est vendu avec une année d’abonnement au service de conciergerie de la marque l’année suivante coûtera 2000 euros. Une seule personne est dédiée à votre service entre 10 et 18 heures en semaine. Une autre personne prendra le relais le reste du temps pour vous servir 24 heures sur 24, 7 jours sur 7 et 365 jours par an. Notre premier contact avec Lika, notre concierge, fut très agréable. Seul le fond d’écran et quelques widgets rappellent le pédigrée de l’appareil un fond d’écran 3D et un très beau cadran de montre, qui bougent en fonction des mouvements du smartphone exactement comme chez l’iPhone. Pour le reste, notamment le clavier, c’est un Android pur de Google c’est rapide et stable, mais pas assez… exceptionnel ! Un écran incassable L’écran du smartphone est entièrement en verre saphir. Cette plaque minérale de 118 carats est presque impossible à rayer. Et pour cause, ce verre est aussi utilisé par les horlogers pour fabriquer des montres haut de gamme. Gage de solidité il est impossible de perturber les cristaux liquides en appuyant, même fort, sur l’écran, et pas plus évident de rayer l’écran avec une clé. Côté affichage, cet écran offre une bonne luminosité de 458 cd/m² et un taux de contraste assez classique 10371. On aurait préféré des chiffres un peu plus élevés, pour égaler le haut de gamme actuel du marché plutôt à 550 cd/m². La définition de l’image est toutefois excellente Full HD, 469 ppp. Pas assez autonome Abordons maintenant les faiblesses du Signature Touch. Son processeur Snapdragon 801 est l’un des plus puissants du marché avec 2 Go de RAM et une connexion 4G. Et les performances brutes de l’appareil n’ont pas à rougir face aux smartphones haut de gamme plus classiques. Elles pourraient toutefois être un peu plus optimisées plus de fluidité et de réactivité, et surtout disciplinées car l’appareil chauffe beaucoup lorsqu’on l’utilise dans une application intensive jeux, 3D, etc. C’est assez gênant, surtout que son autonomie en souffre. Plutôt bonne dans nos tests classiques presque 20 heures en appel, environ 9 heures écran allumé, elle s’effondre dans notre nouveau test encore en phase beta qui consiste à stresser plus sévèrement son processeur le smartphone chauffe, et ne tient que 4 heures 25 minutes, c’est trop peu, et ça se ressent en pratique pas de quoi tenir une vraie journée loin d’une prise secteur en utilisation modérée. Moyen en photo et en vidéo, bonne sonorisation Les haut-parleurs du Signature Touch ont une puissance impressionnante. Certifiés Bang & Olufsen, ils offrent l’une des meilleures qualités sonores entendues au labo supérieure à celle du Xperia Z3, avec plus de puissance qu’un HTC One M8. En photo et en vidéo cependant, les résultats sont moins convaincants, surtout que son optique est certifiée par Hasselblad. Les détails sont corrects, mais les couleurs sont un peu jaunâtres… La majorité des appareils haut de gamme du marché fait nettement mieux, même en vidéo. Encore une fois, l’application logicielle de l’appareil photo est celle de base proposé par Google dans Android. C’est insuffisant. Trop exceptionnel pour vous ? Le Vertu Signature Touch est un smartphone exceptionnel dans sa conception. Ni trop grand ni trop tape à l’œil, il est classe et précieux à souhait, juste un peu lourd en main. Ses finitions parfaites contrastent toutefois avec ses prouesses techniques, largement perfectibles. Son autonomie est trop moyenne, et son système Android devrait être plus différencié par rapport à la version de Google.
